Sore hocks Pododermatities was once thought to occur only in rabbits kept in dirty, damp hutches with inadequate bedding. This is only partially true, because house rabbits can develop sore hocks as can rabbits kept in wire cages.
Overweight rabbits are at greater risk of developing the condition, and, if the nails grow too long, the rabbit will throw more weight onto their heels, exacerbating the problem.

House rabbits can get carpets burns on their front paws from leaping off furniture onto synthetic carpets. If the skin on the foot is just a little red you may get away with changing the surface your rabbit spends most time upon.

Sore hocks are not exclusive to hutch-kept rabbits, house rabbits can get them from carpet burns.

Healthy rabbits should have a shiny coat, free of parasites. There should be regular periods of molting when the coat is replaced. A small pink, callused area on the point of the hock is normal.
